SAP for Sustainability – the Contribution of Services Providers

Businesses are under unprecedented pressure to act on environmental issues as expectations from stakeholders such as customers, employees, investors, and regulators (e.g. the Green Deal, new standards (taxonomy), and country-specific regulations such as the German National Supply Chain Act) continue to rise.

Environmental sustainability is also one of the most dynamic topics in the IT market, and an increasingly important selection criterion for IT services providers. Nearly all leading IT services providers have not only made efforts to address sustainability internally, but have also added sustainability to their portfolios as they see great potential for reducing their clients’ carbon emissions through IT transformation.

With over 77% of the world’s financial transactions involving an SAP system (according to SAP’s 2020 annual report), SAP is a world-leading enterprise resource planning (ERP) provider and an important partner for most leading IT services companies. Unsurprisingly, many leading services providers have started to combine the two worlds. PAC’s SITSI report “SAP for Sustainability – the Contribution of Services Providers“ examines how IT services companies are adding an environmental dimension to their SAP services offerings.

Some key aspects of the report:

  • Organizations need help with data quality and availability of environmental metrics, which are often locked within their SAP systems. IT services providers can help unlock that data through their consulting and systems integration (C&SI) capabilities around SAP’s dedicated sustainability offering ‘SAP Cloud for Sustainable Enterprises’.
  • Moreover, IT services companies leverage SAP’s other products for sustainability purposes. There are many examples of how they expand procurement, supply chain, and analytics solutions from SAP with sustainability metrics. In addition, SAP partners are encouraged by SAP to use the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) to build their own industry-specific sustainability solutions.
  • At the same time, SAP applications can help reduce the carbon footprint of companies’ IT. IT transformation projects range from SAP modernization and consolidation projects, through cloud migration projects, to hosting services in “green” data centers.
  • SAP has built a large ecosystem of implementation partners, product innovation partners, and other experts in the sustainability space. Two of its co-creation partners are Accenture and BearingPoint.
