The transformation of cyber security: how to deliver the new cyber security paradigm

Back in the Renaissance, new chances arose from new trade routes and the world started growing together. The same happens today: in our digital era, new opportunities abound, but just as back then, pirates and corsairs are lurking out there to seize those riches. To protect the digital world from those threats, cyber security needs to embrace a new paradigm – but how should this best be done? Here are some teachings from our recent white paper on the subject.

Digital is at the core of the value chain of most industries, with 65% of the IT decision-makers surveyed in PAC's CxO Survey 2018 (conducted at worldwide level) thinking that digital transformation is important or very important for their IT agenda. The problem is that the key strengths of the digital model are openness, speed and the ability to change, all factors that could easily turn into vulnerabilities from a cyber security point of view. This is why cyber security, too, needs to undergo changes and embrace the new cyber security paradigm: a holistic approach, visibility, cloud and AI. The technological aspect is not enough, however; a major challenge for companies relates to handling the skills shortage in the market, human resources being at the core of cyber security. The best cyber security technologies will be useless without the right people to operate and manage them.

To succeed, companies should proceed as the hackers do (who use the latest digital technologies and can draw on a global talent pool): the new cyber security paradigm needs to be backed with the right resources, and outsourcing, rightshoring and intelligent automation should be taken into account. Without such measures, there will be no new cyber security paradigm and a company's digital transformation, maybe even the company as such, will be at risk.

To protect the new digital world, cyber security, too, needs to become digital, not only in terms of the technologies used, but also as far as resources, organization and processes are concerned – to achieve what we call end-to-end digital transformation.
